Tooth Extractions
What is a Tooth Extraction?
Extracting a tooth involves fully removing it from the mouth. Extractions are done either because no other treatment is helpful in saving a tooth or because the tooth poses a problem to your oral health. We perform extractions in our office safely and easily. They can be done on both pediatric and adult patients as needed.
Why would a Tooth Extraction be needed?
Extractions are needed to help improve your smile and prevent future problems from developing. We always take time to ensure no other treatment is available to help save the tooth. Some of the reasons you’d need a tooth extraction include:
- A tooth is severely cracked below the gum line
- A tooth is seriously decayed
- The tooth is loose because of gum disease or underlying bone loss
- Your child has a baby tooth that won’t come out on its own
- You have impacted wisdom teeth
Who is a candidate for a Tooth Extraction?
Dr. Seto will perform an exam to determine if you might need or will benefit from an extraction. Extractions are done on an as-needed basis. If there are other treatments available to remove a tooth, we will suggest these before completely removing the tooth itself. We will go over any treatment options available to help in replacing the tooth once it’s been removed.
What happens during a Tooth Extraction?
The first step is to administer a local anesthetic. This is done to numb the area and make the procedure more comfortable for you. Dr. Seto then uses special tools to loosen and lift the tooth out of its socket. The process is very quick, and we work to make it as comfortable as possible. Sutures may be needed to help in healing the gums and closing them. We will have you bite down on gauze so that any bleeding is stopped. You will then go home with aftercare instructions to take care of the surgical site.
